NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday, April 6 at approximately 12:25 PM, Negaunee City Police Department Officers were policing a traffic crash that occurred on US-41 West near Teal Lake, when their parked patrol vehicle, a 2022 Chevrolet Tahoe with its emergency lights activated, was struck from behind by a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu that was traveling West on US-41.
The driver of that vehicle, a 35-year-old woman from Marquette and her 11-year-old passenger were examined by EMS at the scene and released.
The officer inside the parked patrol vehicle was examined at Bell Memorial Hospital and cleared to return to duty. Both vehicles were towed from the scene. The accident was investigated by the Michigan State Police and the driver of the 2005 Chevrolet Malibu was cited for speeding.
As a reminder, drivers are to abide by Michigan’s “Move Over” law (MCL 257.653a) which requires drivers to, if safe and possible, move into an open lane away from stationary emergency vehicles, tow trucks, utility service vehicles, and road maintenance vehicles with flashing lights. If moving over is not possible, drivers must slow down to at least 10 mph below the posted speed limit.
Assisting at the accident scene were the Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff’s Department, Ishpeming City Police Department, Negaunee City Fire Department, UPHS Bell Memorial EMS and Antilla’s Towing.
