Josie Lakosky scores eight goals and three assists

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The NMU women’s lacrosse team downed the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals, winning 23-1 at home.

The Wildcats (7-2, 1-0 GLIAC) were led by Josie Lakosky, who scored eight goals and three assists for 11 points to go along with nine shots and shots on goal, five ground balls, five draw controls, and five caused turnovers.

The ‘Cats emphatically controlled the draws, posting a commanding 23-3 advantage, led by a valiant effort from Taylor Roberts, who posted a Wildcat season high and career-best 12 draw controls. Roberts also added her first goal of the season and third of her career, and both Riley Wicklund and Liliana Flemming added their first goals of the season as well.

NMU was 9-10 on clears, while holding SVSU 8-17, thanks to 17 of the 18 SVSU turnovers coming from caused turnovers. Lakosky paced NMU, followed by Natalie Thomas with three and Avery Lorinser with two.

How It Happened
The ‘Cats got to work early, as Lakosky scored her 40th of the season just 39 seconds into the match. Jabas doubled the lead a few minutes later on a great individual play, Lakosky notched her second of the game less than one minute later, and the junior attacker forced a turnover leading to her completed hat trick, and NMU was up 4-0 less than five minutes into the contest. Thanks to an impressive draw control spree, Lorinser, Jabas, and Radke each tallied goals to give NMU a 7-1 advantage with seven minutes to go in the first. Lakosky assisted a Johnson tally before tacking on another of her own, and the Green and Gold took a 9-1 lead at the first break.

The ‘Cats got a pair of quick goals to give NMU a ten goal cushion four minutes into the second frame. Two more from Lakosky and a free position tally from Jabas gave NMU a 14-1 lead. NMU would go up 16-1 at the halftime break.

Roberts and Wicklund added their first goals of the season to extend the NMU lead to 20-1 as the third quarter was winding down. Fleming scored her first goal of the season as the fourth quarter wound down, and NMU cruised to a 23-1 victory.

Up Next
The ‘Cats now enjoy the rest of the weekend off, and are back in action next weekend when they hit the road to Grand Valley and Davenport.
