GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – During the historic blizzard earlier this week, UPAWS staff made sure to continue its around-the-clock care.
On Sunday, two caretakers planned ahead to provide food, water medicine, and even walks to its shelter animals. They hunkered down while the area was hit with over three feet of snow, but came prepared with days of supplies before a third staffer braved the roads to check in on Monday.
Community Outreach Manager, Ann Brownell says she couldn’t be more appreciative of its staff and their dedication.
“Nobody asked them to stay the night, nobody knew that the storm was going to be like that,” she said. “They prepared themselves, they packed extra clothes and food, prepared to be here until Tuesday. Unbelievable, amazing.”
Following the storm, UPAWS maintenance crews worked with all hands on deck to make sure the shelter was reachable by mid-week.
“Our doors were massively piled up with snow, so it was a definite team effort,” said Ryan McLaren, UPAWS shelter support specialist. “We like to pride ourself on teamwork and communication, and none of this would be possible if we didn’t.”
Also due to the weather, the shelter’s ‘St. Catty’s day’ adoption event has been extended through Sunday, more information can be found on upaws.org.
