MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Marquette native and Guinness World Record holder has once again been able to share another major feat with his community.
You may have heard of 81-year-old Bruce Closser after he biked 4,200 miles from Virginia to Oregon in 2023 at age 78, as the oldest person to ever bike across the country.
On Thursday afternoon at the Marquette Regional History Center, he presented another remarkable stretch of 2,600 miles from the coast of Alabama to the coast of Marquette, completed in the summer of 2025.
“When I finished the first one, I thought I was finished, but apparently I wasn’t,” he laughed. “People tell me when they hear this story, ‘I could never do that!’ when most of them could probably do it, its’ that you have to want to. You have to be willing to put a little work into it. There are some really hard days, but we have hard days in every other aspect of life, and that doesn’t always mean it’s a bad day.”
His 2023 trip was made solo, but this second trip was done with multiple driving partners, through about 6 weeks to complete. More about Closser and his first trip can be found at news.nmu.edu.
