Four goals in the third period pave way for 5-2 victory over Orchard Lake St. Mary
For the first time in a decade the Upper Peninsula has a High School Hockey Champion! The Houghton Gremlins scored four goals in the third period to defeat defending state champion Orchard Lake St. Mary 5-2.
The Eaglets took a 2-1 lead just 2:33 seconds into the third on a power play goal by Dominic Pizzo.
But Jack Sayen scored twice in a span of two minutes and 29 seconds to put the Gremlins in the lead. Captain Connor Arko made it 4-2 with 9:53 remaining. Sayen scored his fourth (yes, fourth) goal of the afternoon with 3:33 left in the contest.
Gremlin’s goalie Cooper Flachs made 28 saves.
This is the first UP title in this sport since Hancock went all the way in 2016.
Houghton’s last championship came back in 1982. Congratulations to Coach Micah Stipech and the Gremlins!
