MARQUETTE, Mich. (WAMQ) – The Marquette County Sheriff’s Department is warning people of a new scam that is transmitted via text messaging. The scammers send recipients an official-looking, but fake, court document demanding payment for unpaid tolls.
The fake document includes the name of a judge, a case number, a QR code, and several other falsified items intended to make it look official.
Marquette County Undersheriff Lowell Larson says his advice is to stop and think before acting on any solicitation you receive.
“To slow down, do your research, make sure that you’re not using any strange forms of payment, and try to check with officials to see if it is legit. And that’s one of the great tips that we like to give everybody, is to verify information,” cautioned Larson.
Larson noted that after some research, many of the details of the fake document are incorrect or simply untrue.
He warns people to never click on a QR code that is unfamiliar to them.
