MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – This spring the Schoolcraft Conservation District is helping community members get in touch with nature.
The district has a full calendar of events planned, beginning on March 20 with a wildlife hike, where a Conservation District forester will teach participants how to locate and identify animal tracks. Springtime also brings the return of Warbler Wonderland, an annual birding festival set to take place May 16 and 17. Those events will be followed by a guided hiking series.
According to District Manager Ashley Reitter, such workshops help to connect people with the outdoors. She says they can also lead to an increase in advocacy.
“We all kind of have to do our part,” she said. “If you have a bird that you love to see out on the shoreline or something, it helps you care more about shorelines. It’s an easy way into caring about the environment. It makes it more important to everyone, which I think is something that we all need.”
