MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The superintendent of Manistique Area Schools says no students were harmed after a fire alarm sounded on Friday.
According to a release from Superintendent Matt Lukshaitis, the alarm went off around 8:00 a.m. The school followed protocol, clearing all students and most staff from the building. The remaining staff swept the building for a pulled alarm or fire.
A fuse had blown in a service closet on the second story of the middle and high school. The new assistant principal and a veteran English teacher discovered the smoke and quickly investigated. A flame appeared for approximately three seconds, then it extinguished. The building maintenance man closed the circuit and reset the fire alarm in the service closet.
All staff and students safely returned to the building around 8:07 a.m. Local EMS called to check on the situation. The school’s resource officer informed them that while it was a genuine alarm, the issue had been taken care of.
Lukshaitis says the school is monitoring the closet and the fan to which the fuse was attached.
