National Championships are March 9-14 in Lake Placid, NY
MARQUETTE, Mich. — The NMU Alpine ski teams have successfully defended its USCSA Regional Championship, capped off by the women sweeping the podium and Cashton Jaeger earning gold in today’s giant slalom.
The top three on the women’s side saw Tommie Springer earn gold, Kaylee Byrne silver, and Madalyn Stern bronze, as the trio combined for 2:47.29, ahead of UW-Madison at 2:54.12 and St. Olaf at 2:54.52. Onalee Wallis and Ashley Schaffer finished fourth and fifth, and the ‘Cats saw control of 10 of the top 15 finishes.

The men saw Jaeger claim gold, but as he was a member of the B team, his score would not count toward the team score. Eli Heathman and Anthony Petkov finished fourth and seventh to lead the ‘A’ team, Connor Abraham and Mitchell Forsberg finished eighth and ninth as members of the B team, and Reed Heathman rounded out team scoring in ninth. NMU posted six of the top ten times, and combined for a team time of 2:51.48, ahead of St. Olaf at 2:51.90 and Michigan in third at 2:53.41. Top skiers Noah Bindas and Kyan Hopke both DNF in run one.

The ‘Cats now await the National Championship, which will take place from March 9 to 14 at Whiteface Mountain in Lake Placid, New York.

How It Happened
Men’s First Run
The ‘Cats had a pair of tough first runs, as top-skiers and ‘A’ team member Kyan Hopke and Noah Bindas both DNF in run one, and will not be able to score in the team scoring.
Jaeger (27.95) led the field after run one, the only skier to post a time sub-28 seconds. Eli Heathman posted the fifth fastest time at 28.73, and was followed by Connor Abraham (28.81), Anthony Petkov (28.89), Reed Heathman (29.18), Mitchell Forsberg (29.21), and Nathan Dehart (29.85).
Men Run Two
After a DNF in run one, Bindas posted the third-quickest result in run two at 27.68. E. Heathman (27.81) and Jaeger (27.90) posted the fifth and sixth quickest results, followed by Petkov (28.29), Abraham (28.42), Forsberg (29.21), Dehart (28.45), and R. Heathman (28.58). Hopke DNS in run two.
Women’s First Run
The ‘Cats got a plethora of top finishes in run one, as Springer (28.45) posted the only sub-29-second run one to lead the field. Byrne (29.01) and Stern (29.24) posted the second and third quickest, and Onalee Wallis (29.43) and Ashley Schaffer (29.50) finished fourth and fifth. Cassidy Whitener (29.64), Georgette Sake (30.04), Maya Bubolz (30.05), Blanca Srock (30.14), Julia Greene (30.35), Lucy Stern (31.74), Anna Roethlisberger (32.06), and Camryn Zotalis (32.81) all recorded results. Women Run Two
NMU dominated run two, posting the top five run two results and nine of the top 13 run two times. The top five included Springer (26.78), Wallis (26.80), Byrne (26.83), Schaffer (26.98), and Stern (26.98). Whitener (27.77), Srock (27.94), Greene (28.01), Sake (28.09), and Bubolz (28.25) also posted top times. Stern (30.14), Roethlisberger (30.24), and Zotalis (31.12) posted results, and Witte DNS.
