Lakosky scores eight goals and adds three assists
MARQUETTE, Mich. — The NMU lacrosse team opened the season with a 20-10 win over Calvin College on Friday.
Junior captain Josie Lakosky highlighted the season opener, as the reigning GLIAC Attacker of the Year scored eight goals and registered three assists for 11 points. At the time of writing, Lakosky’s eight goals and 11 points are both single-game season highs among the entire DII landscape.
Avery Lorinser (3-2–5) and Abby Sisson (3-0–3) both added a trio of goals and were second and third on the team in points.
Lakosky paced the team in ground balls (5) and draw controls (8), while Sophie Langsdale led the team in caused turnovers with five.
Netminder Lauren Esposito made 12 saves, the second-most in a single game in her collegiate career with the Wildcats.
The ‘Cats held an advantage in shots (36-28), shots on goal (29-18), ground balls (20-19), draw controls (19-13), and caused turnovers (13-12).
The Wildcats now await the Northwood Timberwolves, who will meet the Wildcats in the Superior Dome on Sunday, February 15, at 12 p.m. ET.
How It Happened
Lakosky opened the scoring of the 2026 campaign, finishing off an assist from Laine Stanton. The teams would trade goals to a 2-2 score before Lorinser and Lakosky added tallies to take a 4-2 lead after the opening quarter.
The ‘Cats came out of the first intermission and went on a tear, scoring six consecutive goals to take a commanding 10-2 lead with three minutes to go in the first half.
The ‘Cats and the Knights traded tallies for a majority of the third and fourth quarters, but it was the ‘Cats who scored three straight to end the game to cruise to a 20-10 victory.
