MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hours before the UP200 began, people flocked to West Washington Street in anticipation of the big event.
Attendees were able to claim their viewing spots, check out the race trail, and visit local stores and restaurants. Shops along West Washington Street enjoyed a steady stream of customers throughout the afternoon.
Chickadees owner Sabrina Kelly says events like the UP200 provide an annual boost in foot traffic for businesses during the slower winter months.
“Every year, we talk about it, we take pictures, we share stories with people that come in during the summer,” said Kelly. “They’re like, ‘You know, maybe we’ve got to try the U.P. in the winter this year.’ It definitely brings people in.”
Kelly says she is proud of the community for coming together to support the UP200 pups and their mushers.
