MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – After years of discussion, a proposed MDOT grant was passed by the Marquette City Commission on Monday that would open the doors for a new overpass on the Iron Ore Heritage Trail.
This will be made possible by the Michigan Department of Transportation and its Transportation Alternative Program Grants, where state funds, in addition to a 20% match by the city, can be given to provide safer routes along shared roadways.
The project is set to be constructed across Wilson street, where the Heritage Trail often meets with heavy traffic.
“We have quite a few of our elderly residents that live out there, and getting them to be more mobile and outside, we want to support that,” explained City Manager, Karen Kovacs. “This would provide us with a safer walking path, essentially. It’s really something that’s great for not just that neighborhood, but also people who are getting around town.”
In total, the build will take roughly $486,000 in state funds, and roughly $115,000 from the city. The project will be further discussed during the 2027 fiscal year budgeting plan later this year.
