SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Friday night crash on US-2 has left four people injured and one dead.
On February 6 at approximately 9:16 p.m., troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) Manistique Outpost were dispatched to a crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck near County Road 442 in Inwood Township. The preliminary investigation shows that the pickup truck, traveling westbound on US-2, was attempting to pass another vehicle in the passing lane during whiteout conditions and on icy roads. The pickup truck lost control and struck the semi-truck, which was traveling eastbound.
The front seat passenger of the pickup truck, a 38-year-old woman from Rapid River, Michigan, was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver of the pickup truck and one passenger were transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. A rear seat passenger of the pickup truck sustained serious injuries and was transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital, then was flown by Guardian Flight to Children’s Wisconsin Hospital in Milwaukee. Another passenger from the pickup truck was transported to UP Health System – Marquette for treatment of a head injury. The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation. Drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors. Manistique troopers were assisted by MSP Gladstone Post, MSP Aviation Unit, MSP NRCC dispatchers, Inwood Township Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, Tri Star EMS, and the Manistique Public Safety Department.
