KEWEENAW PENINSULA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Keweenaw’s snowy start to 2026 is bringing the perfect winter event conditions.
Reports from Visit Keweenaw show the region has already received over 150 inches of snow this season, a nearly 30-inch difference from this time last year, making way for a full stretch of weekend-long festivities.
On Saturday, January 24, the Hancock community will host the return of Heikinpäivä, celebrating the area’s Finnish-American heritage with its annual polar plunge and snow-sculpting contest, with the addition of a new snowman-building contest this year.
Michigan Tech’s Winter Carnival also returns February 4-7, with plenty more snow expected later in the season.
“I think we’re going to get a lot more snow, looking back on previous data we can tell we’re due for at least another 100 inches” said Jesse Wiederhold, managing director for Visit Keweenaw. “But that’s part of the fun, that’s why people come up to see that Keweenaw winter.”
The touring company also says the area’s trails and ski hills have been in prime riding conditions, only improving with the additional snow.
