Bassino gets five tech falls
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The No. 17 Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team had a strong showing at the Mike Duroe Invitational on Saturday, competing against 14 other teams.
Of Northern’s 12 wrestlers, six placed and three earned top-three finishes, highlighted by Sophia Bassino’s perfect run through the 160-pound weight class for first place.
Bassino went a flawless 5-0 on the day, with all five victories coming by technical fall. Her first four wins were each secured in just one period, and in the championship bout she posted a 10-0 win over Kennedy Murray of Illinois Wesleyan.
Northern also had a pair of third-place finishers. Alissa Caltagirone (145) went 3-1 with two pins and a technical fall, while Clarissa Wangen (180) finished 4-1 with a technical fall, a pin, and two decision victories.
Zhivanna Magdaleno (117) earned fourth place, going 4-2 with three pins in the opening round and a technical fall in another match. Abbie Miles (180) went 4-2 and finished fifth with three pins and a decision.
Other strong performances included Alyssa Keane (138), 2-2 with an 11-9 decision and a default win, and Abigale Swanson (180), 2-2 with a pin and a forfeit victory, placing seventh. Samantha Chaon (138) went 1-2 but notched a technical fall win, and Ruby Joseph (180) recorded a 7-3 decision in her victory.
Several other Wildcats competed and put forth a valiant effort, including Jamie Cook (124), Keaton Hood (138), and Mickaela Keane (207).
In 46 total matches, the Green and Gold went 26-20.
