ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Ishpeming Ski Jumping Tournament kicked off its 139th consecutive year Friday evening.
37 ski jumpers came to Ishpeming both locally and from across the world to compete in this official U.S. Cup Competition, all for a spot in the upcoming Nordic Junior World Ski Championships.
Events across the weekend include an array of ski jumping tournaments and cross country skiing races. Ishpeming Ski Club Board member Frida Waara says the tradition couldn’t have continued for so long without the enthusiasm from everyone involved.
“When you think about 139 consecutive years, you look up at that jump and you realize that in the early ski jumping tournaments there was no electricity, there was no ability to motor any snow up,” she said. “It was because of the love and the passion for skiing.”
Also Friday evening, Michigan Representative Karl Bohnak presented the board with a certificate, as this year marks as the 100th year of the Suicide Ski Hill. On Saturday at 6:00 p.m., the ski club will hold a ceremonial ribbon cutting to celebrate its history.
