WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – One person is dead following a structure fire in Wakefield Township on Tuesday.
Local first responders were dispatched to a fire at a residence on Kronberg Road at approximately 5:26 a.m. They received reports of visible flames and one individual inside the residence.
Gogebic County Sheriff’s deputies and members of the Wakefield City Fire Department promptly responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found one resident inside who provided the general location of another resident trapped inside.
Initial attempts to rescue the trapped individual were made, but they were unsuccessful. Personnel retreated due to heavy smoke and flames. Firefighters then gained entry, equipped with self-contained breathing apparatuses. In a bedroom, they found one individual who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident remains under investigation. The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office is not releasing the name of the victim at this time in respect for the involved parties’ privacy.
The Gogebic County Sheriff’s Office and Wakefield City Fire Department were supported by agencies including the Bessemer Township Fire Department, Beacon Ambulance, and the Gogebic County Victim Services Unit.
