Victories over Lourdes, Hiram and Frostburg
TIFFIN, Ohio – The Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team competed at the Tiffin Open on Saturday, where they went 3-1 across four duals.
Northern defeated Lourdes, Otterbein, and Frostburg, while narrowly losing to Otterbein. In contested matches throughout the day, the Wildcats went 19-5.
Northern Michigan 28, Lourdes 1
The Wildcats won all five weight classes that competed. At 131, Jamie Cook picked up a victory by fall, only needing 1:53. Keaton Hood followed with a 16-6 tech fall win at 138, going nearly the distance with a time of 5:28.
Alissa Caltagirone won by forfeit at 145. At 160, Sophia Bassino needed only 52 seconds to record a tech fall win of 10-0.
Abbie Miles (180) and Mickalea Keane finished off the matchup with wins by fall, needing only 45 seconds and 1:07 to pick up their victories, respectively.
Northern Michigan 23, Otterbein 25
The Wildcats narrowly fell to Otterbein, but had to forfeit matches at 103, 110, and 117, which awarded the Cardinals 18 points. NMU got six of those points back with a forfeit win of their own at 180 (Abbie Miles).
In the weight classes that were competed, the Wildcats went 4-2. Cook added another win by fall (1:28) in the 124 bout. Caltagirone also won by fall (1:52) in her matchup. Bassino had the quickest match, taking only 31 seconds to win by fall.
Keane won by a slight 2-0 decision in the final matchup. The Cardinals picked up wins at 131 and 138, both by fall.
Northern Michigan 29, Hiram 5
The Wildcats won five of six contested matches against the Terriers. Cook (0:37) and Caltagirone (0:27) both needed less than 40 seconds to secure wins by fall. Miles picked up her fall victory in 1:04.
Bassino won by tech fall (10-0, 1:26), and Keane added her second decision victory, this time 8-0. Northern won by forfeit at 138 while the Terriers picked up a win at 131.
Northern Michigan 21, Frostburg 21
The Wildcats ended the Tiffin Open with the tightest match of them all, winning by a tiebreaker over Frostburg following a 21-21 deadlock.
Northern forfeited 110 and 117 and faced an early deficit. Northern also lost at 124 by decision and 131 by fall to trail 21-0.
Hood put NMU on the board at 138 with an 8-2 decision win. Caltagirone followed with a victory by fall (2:26). Bassino found herself in a nailbiter at 160, but came through with a 3-3 decision win. Miles then won by fall (1:50), and Keane ended the match with her third triumph by decision (6-0).
