ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Last month, the Marquette County Brownfield Development Authority received a $400,000 epa grant to conduct environmental studies and pre-assess abandoned and contaminated properties throughout the county. They decided to use these funds to help ease the housing crisis in Ishpeming and Ki Sawyer. Today, the authority approved a phase one environmental assessment of a proposed housing development located on a parcel at the corner of Pine Street and Angeline in Ishpeming.
“This is within the City of Ishpeming, this project. So what the Brownfield approved today was for phase one environmental assessment of that property, so we can find out if there was any environmental contamination, any potential concerns for redevelopment of that land,” said Jacqueline Solomon, Director of The Marquette County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.
The ability to pre-assess these properties allows developers and municipalities to more accurately predict what types of mitigation a property may need to be developed.
