NEGAUNEE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Strega Nonna continued its Meatball Drop tradition for the third consecutive year on New Year’s Eve.
The evening began with a full course family style meal, followed by live music from the Flat Broke Blues Band. Later, the restaurant brought out its 30 pound meatball, which is fully prepared and cooked in-house. At midnight, the restuarant dropped the meatball from a nearby balcony to ring in 2026.
The tradition started in 2023, and has become a popular event for residents in the area. Rachael Grossman, owner of Strega Nonna and lifelong Negaunee resident says its a tradition that she wanted to continue in her hometown ever once she acquired the property.
“I bought the building and I wanted to carry on that tradition in my hometown” said Grossman. “We drop a gigantic 30 pound ball of meat (to ring in the New Year).”
