HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – Into the new year, the Copper Country has reported a promising start to its winter sport season. On Monday, Houghton received about 14 inches of snow, bringing a total of over 90 inches since November, making a perfect base for all kinds of events.
The area has been making great use of this snowfall already. Just a few weeks ago, the Portage Lake Lift Bridge opened its lower level for snowmobilers, along with a full run of recreational ski trails like the Swedetown Trails in Calumet, Churning Rapids & Maasto Hiihto Trails in Hancock, and the Tech Trails in Houghton. All three major ski resorts in the Keweenaw have also opened for the season. A full list of openings can be found at visitkeweenaw.com.
Visit Keweenaw says plenty of work goes into making these areas accessible, clearing the ways for one of the busiest times of year.
“All of these are completely open, folks have already been enjoying them,” said Managing Director, Jesse Weiderhold. “What’s really wonderful is that our road crews do such a great job so you can get where you want to go, because in the Keweenaw when it snows, people are going out, they’re not staying in.”
The snow also promises a thorough amount of fun winter events coming soon. A full list can be found here.
