MSU’s Stramel named Tournament MVP

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-1 to No. 3 Michigan State in the 59th annual Great Lakes Invitational Championship Game on Monday at Van Andel Arena. The Spartans won their second straight MacInnes Cup and 14th all-time title. The Huskies finished second for the 18th time.

“Credit to Michigan State. They’re one of the top teams in college hockey,” Tech coach Bill Muckalt said. “I loved the way we played and competed. It’s not the result we wanted, but I’m proud of the effort.”

After a scoreless first period, the Spartans scored three straight. Anthony Romani tipped in the first goal of the game 10:26 into the second from Colin Ralph and Daniel Russell.

Charlie Stramel put in a loose puck at the side of the net at 18:04 of the second. Patrick Geary and Daniel Russell were credited with the assists.

Charlie Stramel scored on a one-timer in the slot 3:08 after the second intermission for a 3-0 advantage. It was his third goal of the weekend with Anthony Romani assisting.

Tech got on the board 5:40 later when Carson Latimer tipped in a shot from Jack Anderson. It was Latimer’s third goal of the season and the third point of the weekend by Anderson.

The Huskies added the extra attacker, and Tommi Mannisto scored an unassisted empty net tally with 65 seconds left for the final tally.

Tech led in shots 33-31, which included a 16-10 advantage in the second period. Owen Bartoszkiewicz had 27 saves, and Trey Augustine stopped 32 shots.

Neither team scored on the power play, with Tech having three opportunities and MSU, two.

Stiven Sardarian and Jack Anderson were named to the GLI All-Tournament Team.

The Huskies wrap up non-conference play this weekend with another four-team tournament at the Desert Hockey Classic hosted by Arizona State. Tech opens against Air Force in the early semifinal on Friday, with ASU and Alaska Anchorage meeting in the late game.

Miami defeated Ferris State 4-2 in the GLI Third Place Game before the Huskies and Spartans took the ice.
