HOUGHTON, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan Tech students will soon be given more space to connect, relax, and recharge as the university has announced its newest infrastructure project, the Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness.
The plan includes over 90,000-square-feet of space, focused on the betterment of student success through easy access to wellness programming and holistic care.
The building will feature designated fitness areas and locker rooms, counseling and medical clinics, and quiet rooms for meditation and prayer, set to be located between the Memorial Union and Administration buildings.
“We couldn’t be more delighted about this, it fits into the overall strategy of the organization to care for students,” said MTU Board of Trustees Chair, Jon Jipping.
The facility will combine services currently spread across 30 locations, going hand in hand with the university’s Be Well Initiative.
“Our students go so many places for these services, so having a central location is going to be important,” explained Laura Bulleit, vice president of Student Affairs. “For example, right now we really don’t have a place in the middle of campus devoted to physical health, whether that be medical services or a place to work out.”
The project has been in talks since 2024, with the help of alumnus Chang K. Park from the class of 1973 giving a generous donation of $55 million, the largest in university history.
“Part of the campaign that we’ve been working toward, Mr. Park was on the committee,” said MTU President, Rick Koubek. “He saw the donations that were coming through and he also wanted to motivate others to continue to contribute to Michigan Tech in a new level.”
Construction on the Chang K. Park Center for Student Wellness will break ground in the spring of 2026, with plans to open its doors in the fall of 2028.
