ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Escanaba business community is continuing to support staff and residents displaced by the House of Ludington Fire last week.
Jen’s Gems by Peach is hosting a relief event on Sunday, December 14, from noon to 3 p.m. Those impacted by the fire will be able to shop for food, clothing, personal care products, and Christmas presents, all at no cost.
“I have a list of names from the manager over at the House of Ludington for the fire victims,” said Jen’s Gems owner James Ayotte. “They can enter in our front door, and we’ll direct them where to go.”
Ayotte has built a large community through a virtual shopping show on the business’ Facebook page. After the fire at the House of Ludington, Ayotte called on that community to help. Many of the items that will be available at the relief event were donated by Jen’s Gems customers.
“Myself and my mom went through a house fire over twelve years ago around Christmastime,” Ayotte said. “We lost everything we’ve ever owned, so we know and feel their pain. I’m just trying to spread the Christmas cheer and tell them, ‘It’s going to be okay. It may not look it, but it will be okay and you will overcome this obstacle.'”
Donations can be dropped off on Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. For questions about making a donation, text (906) 399-7293. To see items still needed, click here.
Ayotte encourages local residents to consider shopping local this holiday season. Throughout the winter, Jen’s Gems by Peach is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays.
