MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – NMU students in the School of Health and Human Performance presented their final projects on Monday, for the SHHP Student Sports Medicine Research Symposium at the Northern Center.
As part of their final exam week, students in the Master’s of Athletic Training and Sport & Exercise Science Programs presented on topics covering nutritional timing, trainer wellness, and concussion educational protocols, among others.
Nolan Pummell, a second year master’s student in the athletic training program told WZMQ 19 it was fulfilling to see how hard his cohort worked.
“All semester, it was always in the back of our minds, on top of the rest of our course loads and clinical experience. This research project was something that, just about daily, we’re adding something to it or constantly working on it, and we know its the same for our classmates” he said. “I think its pretty cool being able to see what everybody else was working on over the semester, seeing it all come together, and how we share more than we thought we did.”
With a long list of potential careers stemming from NMU’s SHHP, students all have a unique focus, whether that be athletics, healthcare, education, or even outdoor recreation.
Jeffery Bailey, another second year master’s student in the athletic training program, says his research for this project began in the summer, and that having attending perspectives from all over the program makes for better feedback after months of preparation.
“Getting the opportunity to be a part of a student research symposium to celebrate all of our hard work, I see overlap happening between our two programs of exercise science and athletic training when it comes to exchanging information and education,” he said.
Across the full-day symposium, around 20 students presented their various partnered and solo research projects.
