ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The City of Escanaba held its annual Christmas parade Friday evening.
Local businesses and organizations made their way down Ludington Street. Each one decked out their vehicle or float for the holidays.
The final float was a special surprise. Santa and Mrs. Claus rode in on a large sleigh being pulled by two white reindeer, one of which had a bright red nose. Escanaba resident John Liss constructed the 18-by-40-foot display last year and set it up on top of his house.
“It started about fourteen years ago, when the wife decided we were going to build that for house,” Liss said. “We finally got to building it last year. Now it’s here, and it’s going to go back on our house as soon as we’re done here.”
Photos of the sleigh and reindeer on Liss’ roof were shared all over social media last Christmas, drawing crowds to his home. Liss’ neighbor–who directed the parade—encouraged him to bring it closer to the community by making it part of the parade. Liss spent about three weeks modifying the display, using air from the truck in front of the float to move Rudolph’s head up and down.
“I was surprised of the excitement and as many visitors we had in our front yard,” he said. “There were vehicles in our yard every day that didn’t belong to us! It’s been fun. It’s nice to see everyone come out, and I hope everyone has a good holiday. We’ll be back next year, I’m thinking.”
Also new to the parade this year, the Escanaba DDA set up hot chocolate stands in front of downtown businesses, helping attendees stay warm as they enjoyed the parade. The lineup was led by 7-year-old prince and princess, Gerald Ellis and Marissa Miron, who won their titles in a drawing.
A few parade participants were awarded prizes. Commercial awards went to Elmer’s County Market in third place, Stenberg Sitters in second place, and Northern Machine & Repair in first place. Non-profit awards were given to Blue Army in third place, Holy Name Catholic School in second place, and Scout Troop and Pack 408 in first place.
