MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – If you head to the Peter White Public Library this time of year, you’re guaranteed to run into quite a lot of Christmas trees scattered throughout the building. These have been set up for the 2025 Winter Solstice Art & Evergreen Program.
Each December, the library holds an opportunity for local artists, non-profits, classes, and businesses to decorate a Christmas tree, displayed alongside local artwork.
“Over the years, we’ve tried things a little bit differently to see what works, see what doesn’t work, and we’re hoping this year it’s a little bit more of a full building experience,” said Andrea Ingmire, PWPL library director.
Into January, around 50 trees are set up and can be found on each floor. Ingmire says every year brings a unique amount of effort from all organizations taking part.
“We never know what groups are going to bring in. Sometimes they bring in things to distribute, sometimes they bring in things to display. It’s an evolving event,” she said.
This includes a tree by United Way of Marquette County, covered in free socks for anyone in need. Another tree honors local residents who have lost a battle to HIV/AIDS, set up by the Marquette County Health Department, as December 1 is also marked as World AIDS Day.
“I always have little red ribbons under the tree for people to add if they want,” explained Laura Fredrickson, HIV/AIDS coordinator for the MCHD. “And every year, a lot of them get added to the tree to commemorate a loved one.”
The Christmas trees will be set up and ready for a reception and tree stroll on December 11, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. This will include an evening of Christmas music, refreshments, and more. Any participating groups have until Friday, December 5 to complete their tree decorations.
