LAURIUM, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Keweenaw Health Foundation (KHF) has awarded a $5,000 donation to 31 Backpacks, providing critical support for hundreds of at-risk children in Houghton and Keweenaw Counties during the holiday season. The funding will help local students access nutritious food when school is not in session—one of the most challenging times of year for families facing food insecurity.

“This donation reflects our commitment to investing directly in the wellbeing of children in our community,” said KHF Executive Director Jenn Jenich-Laplander. “31 Backpacks is a lifeline for so many students, and we’re honored to help strengthen their efforts during a season when the need is especially urgent.

“We cannot thank the Keweenaw Health Foundation enough for this generous gift,” said Melissa Maki, co-founder of 31 Backpacks. “This donation allows us to stock our shelves and prepare for the holiday break, ensuring that no child goes without food during Christmas.”

The $5,000 contribution will be used to purchase food and essential supplies for the organization’s weekly and holiday distributions. As costs continue to rise, donations like this help 31 Backpacks maintain reliable support for the growing number of children who depend on the program.

“The Keweenaw Health Foundation’s support directly translates into full bellies and peace of mind for families,” said Laurel Maki, co-founder of 31 Backpacks. “Their generosity helps us continue our mission with confidence, especially during one of the most critical times of the year.”

The donation also supports 31 Backpacks’ largest event of the year, the Big Pack, where dozens of volunteers gather to assemble the extra food bags that will go home with students before the extended holiday break. These additional supplies help bridge the gap created by the absence of school meals. The Big Pack will take place on Monday, December 8, at 6:00 p.m. at Glad Tidings Assembly of God Church in Hancock.

With this donation, more families across the Copper Country will be able to enjoy the holiday season without the added stress of food insecurity. The Keweenaw Health Foundation’s support ensures that children can focus on the joy of the season, knowing their needs are being met.

For those interested in supporting the Keweenaw Health Foundation’s mission, donations are always welcome. To learn more, call (906) 337-6541.
