42-5 record for the day with five earning gold
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – The No. 11 Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team had a dominant performance on Saturday at the UW-Eau Claire 8 Women Battle, as all 10 competing ‘Cats finished in the top five with half of them winning their weight class.
In 47 matches on the day, the Green and Gold went and incredible 42-5, with five of those going undefeated to earn gold.
At 124, Jamie Cook went 5-0 with four wins coming via pin. Keaton Hood earned her gold with a 4-0 sweep at 138, earning three victories by fall. Alissa Caltagirone made it three top finishers as her 5-0 record in the 145 weight class came with three pins and a pair of tech falls. Abbie Miles (180) had a 4-0 record with three wins via tech fall and Mickaela Keane earned wins by fall, tech fall, and decision in her path to a 5-0 record at 207.
Sophia Bassino (160) and Clarissa Wangen (180) each went 4-1 and earned second-place finishes. Alyssa Keane (138) tracked a 4-1 record to claim third, Samantha Chaon (138) also went 4-1 to take fourth, and Zhivanna Magdaleno (117) staked a 3-2 record en route to taking 5th.
Ranked No. 11 in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) rankings, the Wildcats had one of their best outings in the five-year history of the program, and now the ‘Cats will hope to climb into the nation’s top-ten.
