MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette City Commission voted unanimously tonight to address the need for emergency shelter beds to accommodate the overflow of homeless persons from “Room at the Inn”, which is now at capacity.
The proposal is to house up to ten individuals at the Presque Isle Pavilion.
The commission has now directed city staff, working alongside Room at the Inn, to come up with a plan that would allow these individuals to be housed at the pavilion. They’ll also take into consideration transportation, the safety of residents, and a realistic end date.
“What’s been proposed is looking at the Presque Isle Pavilion as a temporary overflow solution for 10 individuals over the next about 30 days. So from December 1 to January 1, and then at that point, we’ll be able to move our overflow location to the Salvation Army on Barraga Avenue,” said Room at the Inn Executive Director, Chelsie Wilkinson.
The city is expected to hold a public hearing on the matter within the coming weeks.
