WASHINGTON, D.C. – Ukraine’s President said his country is at a critical moment as they work with the US to revise a peace deal. Both the White House and Ukraine released a joint statement overnight saying there’s been “meaningful progress” towards aligning positions on a peace deal.
High-level discussions were held in Geneva this weekend focusing on a peace plan the US laid out a while ago. For the most part, that plan would achieve some of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s goals by Ukraine giving up some parts of their territory. It would also rule out adding Ukraine into NATO; and t.ere would be no NATO troops deployed in Ukraine.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has previously said they do not want to give up any territory. They also want security guarantees that Russia will not attack or invade again. The White House and Ukraine’s presidency said in a joint statement that the parties drafted an updated and refined peace framework but didn’t provide what kind of changes will be made.
The President also said he is giving Ukraine until Thursday to decide if they want to move forward with this deal.
