NMU Women’s Wrestlers finish ninth at Adrian Open

40 teams competed in Southeastern Michigan

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team competed in its second tournament of the season late in Sunday (November 9) night, finishing in ninth place out of 40 teams.

Collecting 134.5 team points, the Wildcats climbed up the leaderboard as the tournament progressed and snuck into the top-10 led by pair of second-place finishes by Clarissa Wangen (180) and Emma Heslin (103). Four other ‘Cats made the top-5.

In total, Northern went 31-16 in its matches.

Wangen went 4-1 in her bouts at 180, making it all the way to the championship match. She made quick work of her opponents in her victories, winning by fall (1:10), tech fall (0:57), fall (0:24), and fall (1:50). She was narrowly edged in a 4-4 decision in the final.

At 103, Emma Heslin went 3-1, picking up three victories by decision on her way to the final match, where she would take a defeat by tech fall.

Alyssa Keane finished in third place in the contention at 138. She also went 3-1, collecting wins by tech fall (2:52), tech fall (1:56), and fall (1:21). Another third place finish came from Jamie Cook at 124. Cook collected the most wins of any Wildcat, going 6-1 in her matches. She had four wins by fall, another by tech fall, and one by decision.

At 180, Abbie Miles finishes in fourth place. She suffered a defeat in her opening match, but bounced back with five consecutive wins before falling in the third place bout. She went 5-2 overall.

Sophia Bassino took fifth place at 160. She started her tournament with three straight wins, but then took on a pair of close defeats. She bounced back to end the day, collecting her fourth win in the fifth place match.

Zhivanna Magdaleno (117) went 3-2 and finished in seventh place. Keaton Hood (138) also collected a pair of wins in her matches. Samantha Chaon (138) and Mickaela Keane (180) also competed for the Green and Gold.

North Central won the tournament with 421.5 points while Presbyterian took second with 266. Full results from the Adrian Open can be found here.
