Goals in three straight matches

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Sophomore forward Ian Weimer of the NMU men’s soccer team has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in his career in week nine of the season.

A native of Mariette, Ohio, Weimer has been in a terrific run of form for the Wildcats as of late, scoring goals in three consecutive matches, including two over the weekend in the 2-1 and 3-0 wins over Roosevelt and Purdue Northwest.

Weimer opened the Wildcats’ senior weekend by scoring the game-winning goal in the win over Roosevelt, ending the Lakers’ dreams of becoming back-to-back GLIAC Regular Season champions. He then followed that up with a goal on Sunday in the team’s win over the Pride, enabling the Wildcats to move into third place in the GLIAC standings and ending the regular season with seven wins, the best finish in NMU men’s soccer history.

Weimer started both games, turning in 73 and 83 minutes of playing time in each match, firing three shots, and scoring from both of his shots that found the target. Since earning an elevated role a the beginning of October, the forward has four goals and an assist in eight games, and is currently riding a three-game goal streak into the postseason.

“Well-deserved award for Ian!” added head coach Alex Fatovic, who has now overseen five student-athletes earn weekly awards this season. “He has been absolutely lethal for the last few weeks. Every touch, every shot, and his overall work rate have been instrumental in our recent run of form, and then he adds two goals to help us cap off a great senior weekend. Well done, Ian!”

Weimer’s (4-1–9, 2 GWG) goal, points, and game-winning goal totals are second only to Rosen (9-2–20, 4 GWG) on the Wildcats this season, as the sophomore is currently smashing career-bests in every statistical category.

With the regular season concluded, the ‘Cats now stay home to host a GLIAC Quarterfinal match, only the second time to do so in program history. After defeating Purdue Northwest 3-0 in the regular season finale over the weekend, the ‘Cats welcome the seventh-seeded Pride back to Marquette next weekend, with kick-off from the NMU Soccer Field set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 9.
