Miles wins 180-pound class

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The Northern Michigan women’s wrestling team opened its season at the Pointer Open on Saturday, with Abbie Miles earning a title in her weight class and four other Wildcats securing top-five finishes.

Competing against 13 schools, five of the 10 Wildcats advanced to the semifinal round as Northern finished 16-16 overall in its matches and totaled 29 team points.

In her Wildcat debut, Miles captured the championship at 180 pounds. Seeded first, she received a bye into the semifinals, where she opened with a win by fall in 1:47. In the title bout, she wasted no time claiming gold, earning another fall in just 48 seconds to score 10 points for the Wildcats.

At 145 pounds, Alissa Caltagirone took second place with a 2-1 record. She recorded a pair of pins in the quarterfinals (1:30) and semifinals (2:25) before falling by decision in the championship match. Her performance added seven points to the Northern total.

Mickaela Keane earned a bronze medal at 180 with a 3-1 record. She opened with a tech fall in 3:49 before dropping her second bout, then rebounded with a 7-2 decision and closed the day with another decision victory, 7-1, to take third and contribute four points.

Also at 180, Clarissa Wangen placed fifth with a 2-2 record, giving Northern three of the top five finishers in the weight class. Wangen began with a quick tech fall in 43 seconds, dropped her next two matches, then finished strong with another tech fall in 1:49. She totaled six points for the Wildcats.

Sophia Bassino finished fourth at 160 after going 3-2. She opened with back-to-back wins, then bounced back from a setback to earn another fall and reach the third-place match, where she narrowly dropped an 8-6 decision.

Jamie Cook (124) added two wins by fall while going 2-2 on the day. Keaton Hood (138) and Samantha Chaon (138) each picked up victories for Northern, both coming via fall. Zhivanna Magdaleno (124) and Alyssa Keane (138) also competed for the Wildcats.
