DICKINSON COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Another Yooper has put his hat in the ring to run for the 38th State Senate District. Republican Beau LaFave announced his campaign last week.
After representing Michigan’s 108th State House District from 2017 to 2022, LaFave is seeking to replace Senator Ed McBroom, hoping to use this experience in the capitol.
“I served for six years, it was an honor and a privilege of a lifetime,” he said. “There are a lot of pitfalls to be found in Lansing, there can be a lot of backstabbing, which is different than in the U.P., but I learned that and I learned it the hard way.”
Raised in Kingsford, LaFave recently passed the bar exam and will be sworn in as an attorney at the Dickinson County Courthouse on Friday, October 31.
In the run for state senate, he looks to increase access to firearms in the Upper Peninsula, lower insurance and electricity costs, and make new businesses easier to build up.
“I want to get rid of the pistol-free zones, we need to lower the cost of car insurance and electricity is way too high,” he said. “I also want to cut the red tape that makes it impossible to start a business.”
With a strong desire to stick alongside his policy, LaFave says that working with both sides at the state level will be best for the Upper Peninsula.
“I am inflexible you may call it; on principled issues,” LaFave explained. “But I can also understand that a good deal is better than no deal at all sometimes, so I’m more than willing to work with both sides of the aisle to get good results for the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.”
LaFave is now the fourth running candidate for the 38th District, next to republicans Dave Prestin and Chris Reynolds, and Democrat Kelli Van Ginhoven.
