Four-goal second period makes for an easy win

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team won 5-1 over Ferris State in the home and CCHA opener on Friday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Huskies came back from a 1-0 first-period deficit, scoring five straight goals over the final two periods.

“We were able to establish our style of play in the second period and take control of the game,” Tech coach Bill Muckalt said. “We’ll grow and learn from the third period. We need to play with more discipline—especially with the lead at home.”

Trailing 1-0 after the first intermission, Teydon Trembecky quickly tied it up only 57 seconds into the second. He stole the puck in the neutral zone and fired a shot past the blocker for his second goal of the season.

Brayden Boehm gave the Huskies the lead 4:11 into the second, scoring on a breakaway in his first NCAA game. Tom Leppa and Jack Anderson assisted on the play.

Teydon Trembecky scored his second of the night 3:10 later on the power play. His initial one-timer was blocked and squirted back to him. He wound up again and blasted in his third of the season and second on the power play. Reid Andresen and Stiven Sardarian were credited with assists.

Isaac Gordon got in on the action at the 11:20 mark of the second, blasting in a one-timer from Trembecky for his first goal of the season and the 26th of his career. Michael Cicek also assisted, as he created the turnover in the offensive zone.

Noah Reinhart scored the final goal with a tap-in on the power play 2:22 into the third for his team-leading third goal of the season. Stiven Sardarian and Reid Andresen added the assists.

“Teydon’s a goal scorer,” added Muckalt. “He shoots to score, and he has play-making ability with a nice pass to Gordo.

“We know how good of a skater Brayden is. He made a really good move on the defender and got a nice highlight goal for his first collegiate goal.

“Noah plays the way we’re asking him to play. He’s confident with the puck, and he plays with two really good linemates with Koski and Stiv. They have good chemistry right now.”

Shots favored the Bulldogs 30-29. Owen Bartoszkiewicz earned the win for the Huskies with 29 saves, winning his third game of the season and the 14th of his career. Hobie Hedquist had 24 saves for FSU.

“Bart made all the saves he needed to make,” Muckalt added. “We need to shore some things up in front of him, but he made some big saves. He did what he’s done his whole college career.”

Ferris State (1-4, 0-1 CCHA) took its lead 13:33 into the game when Jack Mesic scored a power-play goal from Connor McGrath and Xavier Jean-Louis.

Tech (3-2, 1-0 CCHA) was 2-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-6 on the penalty kill.

The two teams will wrap up the CCHA series at 6:07 p.m. on Saturday.

Tech will be honoring the 1975 NCAA Championship Team during the first intermission.
