Just one shot on goal for the Huskies
BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team stalled in a late October GLIAC contest, falling on the road to Ferris State, 3-0 at the Bulldog Soccer Field on Friday.
Michigan Tech (2-11-1, 2-7-1 GLIAC) played even with Ferris State (6-4-5, 6-3-2 GLIAC) in the opening half despite not producing shots on goal.
“I felt like we put together a really solid first half and controlled the tempo of the first 40 minutes. We were playing some of the best soccer we had all season,” said Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar.” But after giving up the first goal, we struggled to stick with our style of play, and Ferris State made us pay for our mistakes. We look to bounce back Sunday and try to get some critical points in conference play.”
The Bulldogs jumped ahead in the 40th minute with Katherine Welching receiving a go-ahead pass, defeating the Huskies’ defense before beating goalkeeper Bri Barrows for a 1-0 advantage just before halftime.
After recording seven shots in the first half, the Bulldogs continued to apply pressure offensively, taking another seven shots in the second half, totaling nine shots on goal for the game. The Bulldogs accrued five corner kicks as the two teams each recorded three in the second stanza.
FSU’s Haley Buckman scored two minutes into the second half to make it a 2-0 lead for the home squad before Welch scored her fourth goal of the season in the 66th minute to decide the game at 3-0 and claim the series sweep.
Freshman Sophie Rater placed a shot on goal with under 23 minutes to go and Peyton Wetzel had a chance at the net but the shot sailed wide of the net with under 14 to play.
Barrows recorded six saves on the day as Rater recorded the lone shot on goal for the Black & Gold.
FSU goalkeeper Korinne Ihrke made one save in 75 minutes in the net before Lauren Kubacki closed out the game.
