Three Huskies score in double figures

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team outscored No. 23 Michigan State 18-15 in the third quarter, but ultimately fell 101-58 to the Spartans in an exhibition clash at the Breslin Center on Wednesday evening.

A trio of Huskies reached double-digit scoring, led by sophomore Kendall Standfest, who shot 5-for-9 from the field while tying the team-high with three assists. Sophomore Ella Mason scored 14 points (3-for-7 3FG) while junior Alyssa Wypych added 13 points, going a perfect six-for-six from the free throw line and a team-high four boards.

“After the initial 10-15 minutes we competed,” said Tech head coach Sam Clayton. “Michigan State is a really physical team that turned up the pressure early and we took a while to settle in against it. But I’m really proud of how we continued to play hard and bring energy for a full 40 minutes.

“Ella and Kendall made some big plays for us offensively. I also thought Aubrey played with a ton of heart and brought a great spark off the bench on both sides of the ball.”Michigan State flexed its muscles early and commanded the opening half, shooting 57.9 percent from the field and 53 percent from 3-point land while causing 11 turnovers by the Huskies to head into halftime with a 65-21 advantage. Emma Shumate (14 points) and Theryn Hallock (13 points) led the Spartans in scoring through the opening two quarters.

The Black & Gold outscored the home team 37-36 in the second half, shooting 50% from the field (14-for-28). The trio of double-figure scorers accounted for 15 of the team’s points in the fourth quarter, while Kaitlyn Maxwell and Bella Hanna chipped in a layup, respectively.

Sophomore Kloe Zentkowski recorded a team-high two steals while joining Wypych with a team-high four rebounds.

The Huskies will officially open the season on Nov. 14 & 15 at the NCAA DII Midwest Region Tip-Off in the Wisconsin Dells, facing GLVC affiliates Lewis and Upper Iowa.
