MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Sunday, NMU students and community members had a chance to learn about the ‘Festival of Lights,’ during a traditional dinner celebration.
Co-sponsored by the Lydia Olson Library and the NMU English Department, the event is in its second year, highlighting the significance of Hindu culture and all of southeastern Asia. The holiday usually coincides with a new moon cycle, falling on October 21st this year.
“It’s so beautiful,” said Shilpa Jhobalia, Diwali Night Committee Member. “Everybody’s dressed up in bright colors, and there’s so many children here tonight too, so I’m excited for them to partake in a cultural event and learn some new folk dancing. My heart is very full.”
Diwali will run for a total of five days, culminating in Bhai Dooj on the final day of Diwali, a celebration of the bond between brother and sister.
