Kuhar: “Cardinals were clinical in front of the net.”
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team endured three goals in each half in a rainy and windy GLIAC showdown at the Robert C. Braddock Field, falling 6-0 to Saginaw Valley State on Sunday.
Saginaw Valley State (8-3-2, 6-2-1 GLIAC) completes the season series sweep of the Huskies, now on a four-game win streak, scoring at least four goals in three of those games.
“Soccer can be a really cruel sport and we were on the wrong side of it today. I feel like we started the game by controlling the tempo and possession, especially in the first 20 minutes,” Michigan Tech head coach Melissa Kuhar said. “But giving up 3 goals in the first half killed our energy and we came out flat to start the 2nd. Credit to SVSU for being clinical in front of the net today and making us pay for our mistakes.”
Michigan Tech (2-10-1, 2-6-1 GLIAC) held its own in the opening minutes as the two teams navigated the elements of wind and rain before the Cardinals struck twice in the 25th minute, putting the Huskies in a 2-0 hole just past the midway point of the first half.
Saginaw Valley State saw six different goal scorers on the day, recording nine shots in each half with 10 shots on goal, while the two teams each had two corner kicks on the day.
SVSU scored in the 38th minute to sustain a multiple-goal lead into halftime and quickly scored again, three minutes into the second stanza.
The Cardinals’ potent offense would find the back of the net two more times before a goalkeeper change from the Huskies occurred in the 72nd minute, seeing Ludesha Reynolds finish out the game in net, making one save compared to two by Bri Barrows.
Bella Vasoli recorded a team-leading two shots on goal for the Huskies, who had seven shots on the day and four on target.
