ISHPEMING, Mich. (WZMQ) – Bow hunting season is here. Kicking off this week with clear skies and warm weather, hunters are eager to be out as soon as they can.
Straight Line Archery of Ishpeming plays a crucial role in providing gear, repairs, and training to all levels of archers, especially this time of year. Owner Shelley Saxwold says while keeping safety in mind, make sure to carry common sense into the busy season.
“This year has been extremely busy, so there’s going to be a lot of people out in the woods,” she said. “Be aware of your environment and who’s around you, and aware that the stuff you’re using can kill you, so just be careful.”
As compound bows are less likely to cause an accidental injury, crossbows can bring a main concern. Especially when children are involved, proper guidance makes all the difference.
“I’d say crossbows would be more of a concern safety wise, than a compound,” said Saxwold. “With the crossbow being as popular as it is, there are a lot of kids with them, so just making sure that they’re safe, can hold them up, and that they’re not putting anything in harms way.”
During the bow season, orange gear (blaze orange) is not required, making the factor of awareness that much more important.
The season will run from October 1, until November 14. Hunters should make sure their license is up to date and gear is properly maintained, to avoid further issues.
