MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Board is in search of a new member after one commissioner stepped down.
District 1 Commissioner John DePetro has resigned from the County Board, effective September 16. A press release states that under Michigan law, the Board of Commissioners may appoint a “suitable person” to fill his vacant seat.
The County is now accepting applications for the position, which carries a four-year term. Applicants must be registered voters in Marquette City, District 1, which comprises the following: Marquette City Precincts 3 & 4 (From the City Boundary, to North of Wright Street, to East of Lincoln Avenue, to South of Fair Avenue, to East of McClellan Avenue, to North of Washington Street, to East of Fourth Street, to North of Fisher Street, to East of Front Street, to North of Whetstone Brook). Whoever is appointed will then have to run as a candidate in the 2026 election cycle. The Marquette County Board of Commissioners set the current salary for this term at $8,000 per year.
Applicants can submit resumes to the Marquette County Clerk’s Office at 234 W. Baraga Avenue in Marquette. The deadline to apply is October 13, 2025, at 4:00 pm.
