CALUMET, Mich. (WZMQ) – A ribbon-cutting ceremony served as the groundbreaking of a historically significant building that will soon be home to a boutique hotel in downtown Calumet.
Calumet has its share of historically important structures, from the mines to Main Street; history is everywhere in this former copper boom town. Now, a Colorado husband and wife team is bringing one historical building back and turning it into a small hotel that will transport you through time.
“It will reflect the Victorian era. So it will be new finishes, but keeping with the charm of the old days,” said co-owner, Rhonda Maas.
“It will be 17 rooms with a full-service bar, a restaurant, and an event center on the back,” added co-owner Michael Maas.
According to Calumet City Manager, the path forward often includes looking back at times at the rich history that is the Keweenaw.
“We care a lot about our heritage and our history and our past, and of course, the architecture here is what makes this place so special,” said Calumet City Manager Megan Haselden.
And beyond having a great place to stay, Hotel Calumet will also revitalize a part of town, which has its fair share of challenging structures, and provide economic opportunities as well.
“So it’s going to create jobs. It’s going to continue creating a ripple through downtown as we see our district continue to get redeveloped. And I think it really marks a good statement that Calumet is open for business,” said Haselden.
This project was made possible due to a $1.5 million Revitalization and Placemaking Program (RAP) grant from the MEDC.
If all goes as planned, Hotel Calumet will soon start taking reservations for the 2027 season.
