Cedarville stings MTU Women’s Soccer

Coach Kuhar satisfied with improved second half

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech soccer team fell 4-1 to Cedarville on Thursday at Kearly Stadium. Peyton Wetzel scored the lone goal for the Huskies.

“Cedarville is a good team, and they’ll soon be ranked,” Tech coach Melissa Kuhar said. “They have a lot of weapons up top who make it tough for the back line.

“We played well in the second half. It was probably our best half of the season. We’re getting better each game, and we’re still learning about ourselves with a number of new players.”

Down 3-0 ten minutes into the second half, the Huskies found an offensive spark. After a goal kick, Tech worked the ball up to midfield. Braydin Noble found Wetzel streaking up the far sideline. She took her time and fired in her first collegiate goal—and the Huskies’ first of the season.

“She needed one,” added Kuhar. “It was a big confidence boost for Peyton and for the group.”

Tech continued to push in the second half and again found the back of the net after a corner kick with just over a minute left. The officials called a foul and waved off the goal.

The Yellowjackets added the final score with 34 seconds left when Maddy McCort booted in a left-footed shot from Amber Garman.

Cedarville (2-1) got on the board 34:24 into the game with a header by Audrey Stanley from Alyssa Griner and Alli Graves.

Brooklyn Scythes added to the lead less than 2:00 later, scoring on a penalty kick.

The third goal of the game was scored by Katie Ulmer as she spun away from her defender and found the open net 3:00 into the second half. Becca Schulenburg assisted on the play.

Cedarville led in total shots 18-7 with a 12-5 advantage in shots on goal. The Yellowjackets led in corners 5-3, and Tech led in fouls 12-11.

The Huskies (0-3) wrap up the four-game home stand on Saturday, hosting Northwood. First kick at Kearly Stadium is at 1 p.m.
