LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Michigan National Guard (MING) 51st Weapons of Mass Destruction Civil Support Team (WMD-CST), in partnership with the Wisconsin National Guard 54th WMD-CST and a diverse range of federal, state, and local agencies, is conducting joint training operations in Escanaba from September 9 – 11. The exercise will take place at the Upper Peninsula State Fairgrounds.

This planned exercise will feature multiple CSTs and agencies integrating their response efforts to a complex chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense (CBRN) threat, including hazardous environment procedures, incident command coordination, and airlift operations to rapidly deploy forces and equipment, simulating a swift response to a critical and time-sensitive emergency scenario.

WMD-CSTs, with their specialized expertise in responding to the threat of weapons of mass destruction, the intentional or unintentional release of CBRN or other toxic materials, and manmade or natural disasters, are at the forefront of this exercise. They support local, county, state, Tribal, and federal agencies by identifying hazards, assessing consequences, advising, and assisting with response measures.

“Working alongside federal, state and local agencies in a realistic training environment is a critical mission, ensuring the MING and Wisconsin National Guard stand ready to support communities in times of crisis,” said Lt. Col. Sara So, commander of the MING 51st WMD-CST. “This exercise underscores the National Guard’s commitment to strengthening homeland defense and enhancing disaster preparedness.”

WZMQ 19 will have more on this training on Wednesday, September 10.
