ISHPEMING, Mich. — The Ishpeming Carnegie Public Library is using National Library Card Sign-Up Month to highlight its programs and invite more residents to get a free card.
“It’s not the only time people can sign up for cards,” librarian Nicole Johnson said. “It’s just about bringing attention to the library and its resources. It’s a fun way to let people know the areas we serve and that they can always come in and sign up for a card for free.”
The library’s September lineup includes weekly Tots Tuesday Storytime at 11 a.m.; a Drop-in and Draw Club with Kathy Hansen on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 1 p.m.; and the Silent Book Club returning Saturday, Sept. 27, at noon at Velodrome Coffee in Ishpeming.
Staff say the offerings are about more than books. “We strive to be a community hub,” Johnson said. “Beyond books, we offer a variety of programs for all ages. We have book clubs and reading-centered events, but also options for trying new hobbies like crochet or drawing, and monthly presentations on topics like local history.”
Unlike some communities reporting declines, Ishpeming’s usage is rising. “We are busier than ever,” Johnson said. “Our stats continue to increase each month compared to the year before, and people love coming to the library.”
Johnson added that a physical gathering place remains essential in a digital world. “We do have a lot of digital resources, but our focus is still on the physical space,” she said. “You’re on the phone so much and it’s nice to be able to step away and read a physical book instead, and also be a space where people can gather.”
Cards are free for residents in the city of Ishpeming and nearby West End communities, including Champion, Humboldt and Ely Township, according to the library.
