LANSING, Mich. (WZMQ) – The future of arts and culture across Michigan is in jeopardy after the state House passed a budget that eliminates all funding for creative programs. The proposal slashes more than five billion dollars compared to the Senate’s version, and completely zeroes out Michigan Arts and Culture Council grants. Advocates warn the cuts would devastate the Upper Peninsula’s creative sector, threatening jobs, tourism, and community programs.
“It would negatively impact the buttons for pretty much every non profit that starts in culture works so I’m talking about schools, we’re talking about museums, local theater’s libraries. Any, any non profit,” said Philip Rice, Executive Director of The Upper Peninsula Arts and Culture Alliance.
The House, Senate, and Governor must finalize a budget before October 1st to avoid a shutdown.
