ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In times of tragedy, it can be easy to feel powerless. However, in the wake of the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis, one U.P. entrepreneur is making a difference from afar.
UP Fresh Eggs is a small stand located at 5017 View 17.5 Drive. Now through Monday, September 1, the business will donate $2 of every dozens eggs sold to the victim’s families.
The stand is run by 16-year-old Carter McDonough. He says the news of the shooting touched the hearts of his entire family.
“Catholic School is, like, what we do,” Carter said. “My two younger siblings go to Holy Name right now, and I went to Holy Name from preschool through eighth grade.”
Even though he is states away, Carter knew he needed to do something to help. That probably did not come as a surprise to those who know him well, as he has a history of generosity and community involvement.
“I do [Carter’s Annual] Tree Lighting,” he said. “I’ve raised almost $20,000 for Shop with a Cop here. I did one for Easton, he had a racing accident at the Escanaba Speedway. I did one for [Hannahville Chief of Police] Jeff Hansen, who has a brain tumor. We did one for Mo’s Pub Too. I just have always liked helping people.”
Carter hopes to raise at least $100 by Monday night. He also sends his condolences to those in Minneapolis impacted by the shooting.
“I’m sorry for everything,” he said. “Our family’s hearts are with you guys.”
UP Fresh Eggs is also accepting monetary donations for the families. Money can be dropped off at the stand at any time.
