ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – One of the Upper Peninsula’s largest Labor Day weekend traditions kicked off on Friday morning. The U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Show is celebrating its 50th year, and after so long, it’s growth has made a difference.
“We went from probably 20 tractors in the 70’s to almost 400 this year,” said U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Association President, Jim Yoder.
The weekend displays all kinds of unique collections from everything engines, to saw milling demonstrations, to the antique village and the gun and knife show. Those involved say its always a great way for attendees to share their familiar interests, as well as provide a great learning experience for children.
“We all get together and have a good time, there’s something for everybody,” said former association president, Skip Dufour. Dufour also the owner of a Parrett Tractor, one of only about seven left in existence.
“It’s kind of a reunion,” said Yoder. “You see the folks that you’ve seen for the last 15, 20 years, it’s the same crew.”
“It’s a way for the older folks to show the younger kids how things were moving 100 some years ago,” said 1915 Ford Model T owner, Joe Vanevera.
This year for its 50th, a new book has been written, featuring over 300 pages of the show’s history and evolution. These be available at the Village’s General Store throughout the weekend.
The U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Show will continue through Monday, and will feature its signature Parade of Power each day at 1 p.m. More information can be found here.
