MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Thursday, the First Tee Northern Michigan branch started the First Tee Marquette extension with an outing at Heritage Golf Course. The non-profit First Tee teaches children golf and life skills, including collaboration, problem-solving, and goal-setting.
With 80 participants, 20 teams of 4 gathered to raise awareness and money for the First Tee Marquette extension. Also at todays outings, to show the connection to the youth that the first tee has, kids where making drives and putts for participants as well as fixing ball marks, and welcoming guests.
“Just about being at the golf course for the kids who have this opportunity, golf is really a gift for a lot of people, it leads to so many opportunities for people, so to give that opportunity to kids that might not be able to go to the golf course,” said Kenn Hruska, First Tee Northern Michigan branch area director.
Another fun aspect at today’s outing was the Northern Michigan branch mascote, golf-a-potamos. Participants had the opportunity to chip a ball into its mouth to be put into a raffle for prizes.
First Tee Marquette will also be working with school districts like Marquette and hopfully in the future Gwinn, Ishpeming, and more. First Tee also offers scholarships for kids who don’t have to resources or access to play golf.
